As we bid farewell to 2020, Alan Lewis of ASE reflects on a very different twelve months.
2020 started with so much promise. Our year was looking good with 7 events planned and we were extremely excited.
We started the year so well with sell out events at our Nipper N Rippers bike ride and our talk with Team New Balance/ Andrew Davies and Steve Vernon.
Then news broke about Coronavirus, we quickly came to terms with the realisation that our events would have to be paused.
Whilst of course I understood and accepted the necessity for our events to close, I was instantly struck by the absence of our cycling and running events.
We made the difficult decision to cancel the Welshpool 10k just 9 days before race day, this caused sleepless nights and hit us hard both emotionally and financially. After the cancellation we were motivated to do something good for the community and we turned things around and made it a virtual run. This was a huge success and we raised over 6000 pounds for Hope House. We had participants from all over the world including France and Japan.
Obviously, the situation didn’t improve and we cancelled all of our events for the remainder of 2020 and for the start of 2021.
The focus is now on the 2nd half of 2021, we are extremely excited about our programme which includes two new events, the Bryn Kinalt Running festival on the 4th July and Pedal The Borders bike ride on the 25th July. We will also have the Midnight Ride, Pedal Pushers and Oswestry 10k in 2021. All events will have a charity focus for the year and we looking forward to working with Hope House, The Movement Centre and Lingen Davies.
We are extremely lucky to have the support of commercial partners who believe in what we do, who trust that it will pass and continue to back us regardless, and all the while having to manage their own response to Coronavirus and the impact on their businesses. We are also very lucky that we have a strong support network through friends, volunteers and a good loyal local sporting community to help us through.
All of which gives me great hope and confidence for 2021 and beyond.
Best Wishes Alan
